The new season started with a steady home performance from the Countryman team. Some new faces this year have brought strength in depth to the squad, and despite missing some key players through injury, the first game saw some encouraging football.
Grasshoppers were industrious but couldn't match the possession enjoyed by Countryman who deservedly took the lead on the half hour through Guy Culliford from a corner. Some strong passing and good movement provided a good platform for the second half, when Countryman extended their lead through a smart finish from Toby Tucker from eight yards. A deflected cross and own goal by the Grasshopper side finished the scoring to give the Countryman a fine start to the season.
A fine sportsmanlike performance from the two sides as well hopefully marks the start of things to come, both sets of players showing respect and good humour throughout.
