SUNDAY 24TH APRIL - ROUND-UP |
|
Another Uxella League cup final took place this weekend with Tiger Old Boys celebrating last week's confirmation of their continued status as Uxella League champions by adding yet another trophy to their bulging cabinet after a relatively comfortable 5-2 victory over Clearwater that secured them the Bill Brown Division One Cup.
In a strange twist, the Tigers actually scored every one of the game's seven goals because one of their number, Colin Gillespie, somehow managed to notch two own goals during the course of the game. Fortunately for him, five winning goals were scored at the other end through strikes from team-mates Paul Atyeo and Mike Nicholson plus two delicately worked efforts from Rob Fearn and a forty-yard screamer from Lee Huntly after he had come on as a substitute.
Meanwhile, there were two significant Uxella League games played out in Division Two with Cross Rifles and Black Horse battling it out in their respective final fixtures for the runners-up spot after Tiger OB Reserves had wrapped up the second division title last weekend.
The Rifles did what was asked of them as they went to Ashcott and came away with a comprehensive 6-0 victory after five superb goals from Craig McGann and a further strike from the equally prolific Lee Stentaford to add to his impressive haul for the campaign. Despite the high scoreline the Rifles man-of-the-match was goalkeeper Nigel Futcher who made a string of impressive stops at various points during the game and also distinguished himself with the excellent saving of a penalty plus the follow-up shot that came back at him as a result of the rebound.
While on paper it had looked as though Black Horse had the tougher end-of-season finale as they travelled to second flight champs Tiger Reserves, they actually registered a six-goal tally of their own as they beat a Tigers outfit who looked to be going through the motions with nothing meaningful left to play for. A priceless 6-3 victory thereby secured the runners-up spot for Black Horse as they ended the campaign with a point more than Cross Rifles.
In Division Three, Sportsman continued their strong end-of-season surge as they swept Pig & Whistle Reserves aside in a 6-1 away win. Andy Skidmore stole the show with a first half hat-trick and was joined on the scoresheet after the break by Tyne Govier, Paul Organ and by Simon Dodden who smashed home a 25-yard volley. Jamie Evans responded with a late consolation goal for Pig Reserves but Sportsman will be in a confident mood ahead of their upcoming midweek encounter with title rivals Puriton United.
