SUNDAY 17TH APRIL - ROUND-UP

Another large crowd was in attendance to watch this Sunday's Danny Markall Second Division Cup Final between Cross Rifles and Ashcott. The Rifles took an early lead through Paul Cornish but Ashcott soon levelled to make the score 1-1 at the interval. The scores then remained level until five minutes from time when Cross Rifles player Jason "Bepe" Stevenson scored the vital goal that sealed a 2-1 victory and a first piece of silverware for this up-and-coming club.

Tiger Old Boys sealed the Uxella League Division One championship with a 1-1 home draw against Woolavington rather than a win that would have maintained their 100% winning league sequence. In truth this encounter was a relatively low key affair considering it was between the two best sides in the league but that was probably due to a number of key absentees from both teams. Mark Pope scored for the Tigers and Tom Presley bagged Woolavington's effort but the Tigers could well have secured all three points had it not been for some stout Woolavington defending and an excellent penalty save by Scott Collard to deny Tiger's Darren Chillingworth.

In Division Two a valiant effort from a makeshift Eastover Wanderers side saw them lose only narrowly in a 2-3 home defeat to Second Division champions Tiger OB Reserves. In fact the Wanderers gave Tigers Reserves a real shock by holding the lead until the 80th minute, and were helped in no small part by a magnificent goalkeeping display from Darren Pear and two good goals from Simon Chidgey. However, the man of the match was Tigers' Justin Lewis who bagged a match-winning hat-trick which included a superb 25-yard free-kick in the 90th minute to seal the victory.

In Division Three Glastonbury Town Sundays gathered three valuable points from a 3-2 home victory over Pig & Whistle Reserves thanks to two goals from Sam Vincent and one from James Shaw.

Meanwhile another Glastonbury side, Tor Sports, appeared to suffer a hangover from their Geoff Harvey Cup Final defeat last week by going down 3-4 at home to Countryman despite goals from Paul Pentney, Dan Lawson and John Osman.

Without a doubt the biggest game of the day in the third division on paper was between table-topping Artillery West Huntspill Boys and fellow title-chasers and Geoff Harvey Cup winners Sportsman, but the reality was a different matter as the spectacle dissolved amid controversy and came to a premature end with the score goalless after 35 minutes as the Artillery team walked off the pitch after one of their number was sent off. Speculation is already mounting that there could be dramatic repercussions for both Artillery and the Division Three table in general as a result of this act which could effectively constitute the non-fulfilment of a league campaign. If that proves to be the case then this could bring into play league rule 12.10 which states that "In the event of a team not completing its fixtures for the season (unless through no fault of its own) all points obtained by or recorded against such defaulting team shall be expunged from the league table".
