DIVISIONAL CUP FINALS AND LEAGUE ROUND-UP |
|
Sunday morning saw the old campaigners of Tiger Old Boys make it a treble trophy haul for the 2007-08 season after their watertight Division 1 Cup Final with Pawlett United was decided just before the interval when veteran striker Paul Meare slotted home clinically. The 1-0 victory adds the Bill Brown Cup to a cabinet that already contains the Presidents Cup and Dave Hobbs Cup.
Meanwhile, an afternoon kick-off saw Bridgwater Wanderers secure the Division 2 Cup with a 3-1 win over Woolavington Reserves to ensure that they will not be left empty-handed should Bower United eventually overtake them in the final straight of the Division 2 title race when they play their four games in hand.
Uxella League action continued elsewhere with hotshot striker James Bawden playing in goal for Quantock Pride in their away game at Cross Rifles. He managed to keep a clean sheet until five minutes from time when he conceded a goal followed by a penalty kick. Fortunately his team-mates Shane Nielson (2), Paul Goss and Scott Slaney scored four at the other end to ensure a 4-2 victory for the away side.
A Simon Caddy hat-trick and further goals from Adam Kinsey and Marcus Butler gave Woolavington a 5-1 victory at Maltshovel and consolidated their lead at the top of the table. They now have a three point cushion over second-placed Tiger Old Boys with a game in hand as well. Darryl Cock bagged Shovel's consolation effort. Meanwhile, in Division Two, despite starting the game with only nine men Cannington still managed to take the lead in the very first minute of their home game with Grasshoppers '05 after a superb lob from Darryl Taylor. The equally veteran Matt Weston levelled for the Hoppers Reserves midway through the first half but a second strike for Taylor plus a brace from Josh Turner and one from the outstanding Sean Roberts gave a 5-1 win and three points to the home side and guaranteed them third place this season despite having six points wiped off their record following the expunging of the folded Coxley Rovers' results from the newly adjusted division two table.
The other game played in the second division saw Admirals in free-scoring form in their penultimate match of the campaign away to Abbey Moor. A hat-trick from John Doyle and two each for Kev Andrews and Martin Cheese saw them win 7-0 to confirm a fifth place finish.
