With current Uxella League leaders Red Tile having played their full quota of league games this season Woolavington moved ominously into second place after a 6-3 away win at Pawlett United as they continue to play catch-up on the fixtures front. They leapfrogged Tiger Old Boys on goal difference and are now only a point behind Tile with five games in hand on the table-toppers. Although the final scoreline looked comfortable Pawlett made a real game of it in the first period with the scores level at 2-2 at the break. Marcus Butler (2), Danny Mira (2), Matt Fursland and Jake Chidgey sealed the win for the champions. Bradley Gill, Simon Coombes and Marcus Slade replied for the home side.
It was a case of a point-a-piece in the game between Railway Club and Quantock Pride as they contested an action packed 4-4 draw. Railway's goals came from the two ends of their age spectrum as 16-year-old Liam Neal scored on his debut and was joined on the scoresheet by 45-year-old Nigel Gillard. A Barry Hardwell strike and a 40-yard free-kick from John Richards were Railway's other efforts. Paul Goss (2), Steve Lock and a James Bawden penalty was Pride's response.
There were also plenty of goals in the game between Maltshovel and Flag Old Boys which eventually saw Shovel emerge as 5-4 winners. However, by Flag's own admission, the narrow margin of victory does not do justice to Maltshovel who bossed the game from start to finish. Flag actually took an early lead through Fred Hemmings but the home side were soon well in control with a 3-1 lead at the break after goals from Daryl Cock, Mike Skidmore and a 25-yard belter from Steve Davis. Lee Turner then reduced the deficit to 4-2 early in the second period before Dean Organ and Andrew Skidmore made the points safe for Maltshovel. There was still time for a further Flag consolation effort from Mike Taylor five minutes from the end.
In the remaining game in Division One Cross Rifles exacted revenge for their recent heavy loss at the hands of Ashcott by trouncing the same opponents 7-1 at home.
Meanwhile, in Division Two all eyes were on the titanic clash between leaders Bridgwater Wanderers and the young Bower United side who, like Woolavington in the first division, have an excellent chance of winning the title if they win their games in hand. United duly took a huge step towards the championship by beating the Wanderers 3-1 at home after strikes from Scott Capel, Jon Harriott and Brendan Pope. Vince Kennedy replied for the Wanderers who remain top, two points ahead of both Cannington and Bower and who have the perfect chance for revenge when they meet Bower again next week at home.
Fourth-placed Admirals ran out 4-2 winners at home to Pawlett Reserves after goals from Kev Andrews (2), Jason Bale and Andy Cheese.
Fifth-placed Blake Old Boys were given a real game of it by bottom side Grasshoppers '05 before eventually pulling clear to win 4-2. The league's top scorer Kev Warre was again on target twice, including one from the penalty spot, to take his season's tally to an amazing 52 goals. A floated effort into the top corner by Ben Howes and a cracker from classy, veteran super-sub Jamie Winter sealed the win for the home side. Goal-a-game teenager Liam Moore and a superb lob from George Weston was the Hoppers response.
Huntspill Crowns won 6-3 at home to Abbey Moor after a hat-trick from Paul Burrow plus further strikes from Andy Kitch (2) and Jason Roberts.
In the remaining game in the second division Ramblers recorded only their third win of the campaign with a priceless 1-0 home victory over L & G. Matt Sparrow was their match-winner.
