MATCHDAY 19 ROUND-UP

Despite another week of daily downpours the Uxella League fared slightly better this weekend with three matches defying the elements.

Two games took place in Division 1 with Cossington's ever-reliable pitch being deemed fit enough to stage a mouthwatering clash between second placed Red Tile and league leaders Tiger Old Boys. Tile looked to be on course for a famous victory after taking a 2-0 first half lead through a thunderbolt shot from Jason McPheat and a brilliant individual goal from Damon Jennings. However, the second half was a different story with a Paul Meare left footed shot and a Jamie Chillingworth penalty seeing the Tigers draw level. Then, when a draw seemed to be on the cards, Lee Huntley popped up to seal all three points for the Old Boys with an overhead kick in the dying seconds to make it 3-2 to the Tigers.

The other game to take place in the top flight saw home side Flag Old Boys switch venues to the Cannington College base of opponents Pawlett United. With a strong wind blowing at their backs in the first half Flag similarly took a 2-0 advantage into the break after Lee White had headed home from a corner and Martyn Allen had converted a penalty following the upending of Sebastian Mish in the box. The second period then saw Pawlett enjoy the wind advantage and they proceeded to pile on the pressure themselves, eventually winning and converting a penalty midway through the half. Flag were forced to defend resolutely to protect their one goal advantage and eventually went on to secure a 2-1 win, their third victory in their last four outings, albeit separated by many weeks of weather enforced inactivity.

The remaining game of the day saw a major upset in the Second Division with leaders Cannington playing an away game at their own ground but going down 5-2 to the young Bower United side. Shaun Turner scored twice, Steve Hall bagged one and Sam Puddy converted two penalties for Bower. Sam Chillingworth and Dean Taylor struck back for Cannington.
