With both the First and Second Division titles decided a couple of weeks previously it was time for the two divisional cups to reach their conclusion. In keeping with the frenetic end-of-season fixture programme the semi-finals of the Bill Brown Division 1 Cup and the Danny Markall Second Division Cup were both played on Wednesday evening.
In the first Bill Brown semi Maltshovel played host to Maxwells in a very close affair that eventually went all the way to a penalty shoot-out. Maltshovel took the lead on three separate occasions during normal time with Simon Dodden bagging two and Shaun Smith scoring with his first touch after coming on as a sub. However each time the home side went ahead Maxwells kept coming back to level the scores. As such, with the scoreline at 3-3 at the end of ninety minutes, the contest went straight into the dreaded shoot-out. Keeper Paul Organ excelled for Maltshovel saving two spot kicks and the stage was then set for skipper Dodden to smash home the winning penalty and send his young side through to their third consecutive cup final.
The other Bill Brown semi final also went to penalties after Red Tile and Tiger Old Boys drew 2-2 at the end of ninety minutes. Penalties even played a large part during normal time as both of the Tigers' goals came from the spot and on both occasions were successfully converted by Lee Huntley. However, Andy Staunton and James Hamilton replied for Tile to leave the two sides at a deadlock. Ironically Huntley then missed his shoot-out spot-kick but was not the only one before Red Tile eventually won 2-1 on penalties to secure their place in the final.
Meanwhile in the first of the Danny Markall semi-finals Division Two runners-up Commercial booked their place in the final with a 4-3 home win over Bridgwater Wanderers and yet again a penalty was the deciding factor with Commercial's winning goal being a spot kick in the final seconds of the game. Robert Trice (2), Darren Hewitt and Gordy Addicott were the goalscorers while Kev Warre, John Richardson and an own goal kept the Wanderers within a whisker of the final themselves.
In the other Danny Markall semi Cannington made light of the long evening trip to Wookey Sports as they ran out 3-0 away winners to book their place to face Commercial on Sunday.
