MATCHDAY 34 ROUND-UP

Longstanding rivals Tiger Old Boys and newly-crowned Uxella League champions Woolavington went head-to-head on Wednesday evening with both teams missing a number of key players due to work commitments. Despite the missing personnel neither side took this fixture lightly but the Tigers were the more potent force on the night, winning 3-1 after a double strike from veteran marksman Paul Meare and yet another goal from the ever-reliable Jamie Chillingworth. Simon Caddy responded for a strangely off-colour Woolavington attack. This result will give the Tigers plenty of optimism ahead of the much-anticipated Dave Hobbs Cup Final between these two heavyweights.

The other midweek game played in the top flight saw a really tight encounter between Cross Rifles and Flag Old Boys which eventually finished 1-1 after a goalless first half. Richard Jones gave the Rifles the lead fifteen minutes into the second period but that man Michael Baran, Flag's recent Polish discovery scored yet another goal to maintain Flag's impressive end of season run. A special mention must also go to Flag's 49-year-old Ricky Williams who was pressed into action for his first start of the season and did a superb job in a holding midfield role.

There was one game played in the Second Division but it was an important one as leaders Quantock Pride entertained bottom side Grasshoppers '05 knowing that a victory would leave them just three points away from winning the division 2 title. While on paper this game may have appeared to be a mere formality the Hoppers second string had other ideas as they gave debuts to five recent Slovakian signings. The foreign imports made the first half a very even affair with the scoreline delicately poised at 2-2 at the break. However, the irrepressible James Bawden had other ideas as he scored two outstanding goals in the second half to make the game safe for Pride with a 5-2 victory that sets them up for a championship party on Sunday if they can successfully overcome next opponents Admirals.
