With the changing of the clocks and the subsequent lighter evenings midweek action returned to the Uxella League on Wednesday night with the big game seeing the top two go head to head as champions Woolavington played host to second-placed Railway Club. This highly charged and tight encounter eventually saw Woolavington emerge as narrow 2-1 winners after goals from Jason Jones and Matt Blackmore. The result means that Woolavington need only one more victory to seal the championship.
Cross Rifles were able to field a full-strength side for the first time in many games and this was a key factor in their impressive 4-0 away victory at Maltshovel. Jason Stephenson, Mike Hawthorne, Adam Kinsey and Chris Goodison from the penalty spot were the scorers.
The wheels appear to have come off for Grasshoppers '04 as their occasionally promising first season in the top flight nears a faltering conclusion. Despite matching visitors Flag Old Boys for most of the first half and only trailing by a solitary goal at the interval they once again crashed and burned in the second half, falling to a 7-0 home defeat. A resurgent Flag side have been boosted by the addition to their ranks of powerful new Polish striker Michael Baran. The tall Eastern European bagged another two goals to take his tally to four in his first two games in English football. He was joined on the scoresheet on this occasion by hat-trick man Jamie Stewart, Danny Crossley and Andrew Johnson.
In the other game played in the top division on Wednesday evening Maxwells secured a surprise point after drawing 2-2 at home to Tiger Old Boys but it could have been even better as they actually led 2-0 with only five minutes to go after a brace from Sam Mullins. However, the wily old Tigers once again demonstrated their 'never say die' spirit as Pete Hobbs and Paul Hooper struck with late efforts to deny Maxwells what would have been a famous victory.
There was one game played in the second division with the young Bower United outfit entertaining title contenders Quantock Pride. This was another tight game with an early Paul Bawden headed goal being cancelled out by a Shaun Turner strike for united before the break. The contest then looked to be heading for a draw but Pride's ever-reliable James Bawden popped up to score a crucial winner in the dying minutes of the game.
