Amid swirling winds and lashing hailstones reigning Uxella League champions Woolavington moved a step closer to another double this time around as they booked their place in the final of the Dave Hobbs Cup after winning a tight semi-final at Red Tile by a margin of 3-1. Their job was made easier early on in the game when a couple of Tile defensive errors gifted the visitors two goals before Damon Jennings hit back for Red Tile to make it 2-1 at the break. Tile then had some good opportunities to equalise at the start of the second period but were unable to convert them and a third Woolavington goal provided the necessary cushion that the visitors were seeking. Gary Head, Matt Blackmore and Matt Fursland struck the goals that sealed the victory.
Woolavington's opponents in the final will be decided next weekend when Cross Rifles will play host to Tiger Old Boys in the second semi-final. The Tigers booked their passage to the last four this weekend after an impressive 6-2 quarter-final home win over the youthful Grasshoppers '04 who once again came unstuck against a more experienced side. Lee Huntley (2), Paul Meare (2), Max Cushing and Shannon bagged the goals for the home side while teenagers Luke Tier and Matt Burgess replied with consolation strikes for the Hoppers.
In the Uxella League's first division Cross Rifles were unable to extend their recent run of victories as they went down 3-0 at home to Maltshovel Sports. An early penalty from Steve Davis and a good strike from Shane Smith separated the sides at half-time. The arrival of second half subsitute Chris Davis then lifted Maltshovel further as he terrorised the Cross Rifles defence before seeing his saved shot followed up by Jordan Meaker to seal the win.
The only other game in the top flight saw Ashcott register their seventh league win of the campaign with a 1-0 home victory over Flag Old Boys thanks to a strike from Chris Bell. For the second week running Flag created plenty of chances during the game but were unable to convert any of them, resulting in the words 'cows backside' and 'banjo' being the central themes of their post-match inquest.
There was plenty of action in division two with the stand-out result being the surprise 2-2 draw between leaders Commercial and second-from-bottom Countryman with Commercial strangely off-colour but ultimately thankful for an Olly Pearce strike and a Countryman own goal which saw them salvage a point from a bad day at the office.
For the second week in succession third-placed Cannington spurned the chance to rise above non-playing Blake Old Boys into second position as they suffered another defeat, this time losing 3-2 away to Admirals. John Doyle, Lloyd 'the welsh wizard' Davey and Kev Curran scored the winning goals for Admirals.
Cannington's slip-up means that Quantock Pride were able to go second instead as they ran out 2-0 home winners over Pawlett Reserves. A superb 20-yard strike from Liam Nash and a well directed header from Paul Bawden gave Pride a 2-0 advantage at the interval. The second half then saw them enjoy plenty more possession but they were unable to add to their tally.
The youngsters of Bower United recorded an impressive 5-0 away win at Bridgwater Wanderers thanks to goals from Ryan Weston, Darryl Puddy, Scott Capel, Steve Hall and Brendon Pope. The Wanderers had been matching the visitors until they lost Ryan Hobbs to injury and were reduced to ten men, at which point United took complete control of proceedings.
Bottom side Grasshoppers '05 found themselves leading 1-0 at the break in their away game at Woolavington Reserves after a well-taken strike from Dave 'Elvis' Norrell but not for the first time this season they came unstuck in the second period as Anton Bolton, Mark Pope and Gary Butler turned the game around to secure a 3-1 win for the home side.
In the remaining game in the second division Huntspill Crowns won 2-0 away to Wookey Sports thanks to a strike from Jeff Read that took full advantage of a powerful gust of wind and an own-goal by Wookey's Pete Somers five minutes from time.
