MATCHDAY 28 ROUND-UP

With the weather being just about as good as it could possibly get at this time of year the Uxella League achieved a near full programme of matches for the first time in many weeks.

First division leaders Railway Club remain in top spot after securing a point from a 3-3 away draw at longstanding rivals Tiger Old Boys after two goals from veteran Lee Hemsley and one from Neil Barnett. Wilf Davie, Matt Washer and Jamie Chillingworth responded for the Tigers who might even have stole all three points had it not been for some rusty finishing perhaps resulting from a lack of competitive action over the past month.

Reigning champions Woolavington closed the gap on Railway to just one point with two games in hand after winning 4-2 away at Maltshovel Sports. Maltshovel took the lead twice early in the game through Jordan Meaker and Dean Organ but on each occasion Woolavington levelled. The second half then saw Woolavington step up a gear as they scored two more to seal yet another victory after a brace from Marcus Butler and one each from Ian Bellinger and Matt Blackmore.

Red Tile consolidated their position in third spot with a solid 3-0 away victory at Ashcott thanks to strikes from Andy Smith, Neil Thompson and Damon Jennings.

Fourth-placed Pawlett United were also victorious but only after coming from 2-0 down at half-time to win 5-2 against bottom side Bunch of Grapes.

Grasshoppers '04's impressive recent run of results came to a shuddering halt as they went down 6-2 at home to Cross Rifles. For once their young side was given a taste of its own medicine from an opposing teenager in the form of 16-year-old James Bell who bagged a fine hat-trick for the Rifles. Two goals from the ever impressive Craig McGann and one from Paul Cornish completed the rout for the visitors. Teenagers Bob Hughes and Russ Pigden responded for the home side with well taken efforts but the Hoppers' overall team performance lacked their usual fluency and desire.

In the remaining game in the top flight lowly Maxwells registered a priceless victory for the first time in eight games as they won 1-0 away at Flag Old Boys. The first half was a very tight affair with very few chances at either end but the visitors broke the deadlock soon after the interval when Steve Spencer was brought down in the box and then got up to successfully convert the resulting spot kick. The remainder of the game then saw a relentless Flag onslaught but the Maxwells keeper and defenders held firm to steal all three points for the visitors.

Meanwhile in the second division Commercial extended their lead at the top of the table after registering a 3-1 home win over Bridgwater Wanderers. Despite the scoreline it was a close affair for long periods but two goals from Robert Trice and one from Gordy Addicott ultimately decided the contest in Commercial's favour. Kev Warre replied for the Wanderers while their keeper Kurt Brown was in outstanding form.

With second-placed Blake Old Boys game being postponed third-placed Cannington had the opportunity to leapfrog them but instead they lost 2-1 at the hands of the young Bower United side for whom Steve Hall and Scott Capel scored the decisive goals.

At the other end of the table the two bottom teams were both on their travels and both ended up on the losing side.

Second-from-bottom Countryman visited Woolavington Reserves but suffered a 5-0 defeat after goals from Matt Brewer, James Cornish, Gary Butler, Kev Dibble and Tom Presley.

Bottom side Grasshoppers '05 fared only slightly better as they made the long haul trip to Wookey Sports and put up a spirited first half display which saw them drawing 1-1 at the break. However, they were unable to hold on for a point as the game wore on and Wookey made them pay with two further goals to make the final score 3-1. Joynul Ali (2) and Paul Forster were the goalscorers for the home side while Chris Lynham responded with the Hoppers' consolation strike.
