'Water, Water everywhere ...and most pitches unplayable'. That is how former local poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge might have summarised the current situation in the Uxella League where yet again the wet weather had a devastating effect on the fixture programme. This time around five of the eleven scheduled matches were completed amid atrociously wet and windy conditions.
One of the two rescheduled Dave Hobbs Cup Quarter-Final ties reached a conclusion as champions Woolavington beat Flag Old Boys 5-1 thanks to two goals from Matt Fursland and one each from Marcus Butler, Matt Blackmore and Jake Chidgey. Mike Taylor responded for Flag. Woolavington will now meet Red Tile in a mouth-watering semi-final clash in a fortnight's time where Woolavington will be looking to avenge their recent 4-1 league defeat at the hands of Tile.
The other outstanding Dave Hobbs quarter-final between Tiger Old Boys and Grasshoppers '04 was postponed for a second time with the pre-match pitch inspection bearing more than a passing resemblance to a tour of a paddy field. Whoever eventually progresses from this quarter final will be away to Cross Rifles in the last four.
One fixture made it in the Uxella League's first division with Railway Club emerging narrow 2-1 winners at home to Maxwells after strikes from Carl Tucker and John Richards. The result sees Railway go top of the league, three points ahead of Woolavington who have two games in hand.
Three matches went ahead in the second division with the ever-forgiving Victoria Park playing host to a 'dancing on mud' special between Bridgwater Wanderers and Grasshoppers '05 where it was enough of an achievement just to stay on your feet. This see-saw of a game saw plenty of action at both ends with the Hoppers taking an early lead thanks to a goal direct from a corner from evergreen 53-year-old scotsman Bob Kippen. However, some impressive long range shooting from Wanderers soon turned the game around as they raced into a 3-1 lead before a superb volley from '05's Sam Peppin reduced the deficit to 3-2 at the break. A further surge in the second half saw the Wanderers extend their lead again as they made it 5-2 to effectively make the game safe before a Chris Lynham bullet header gave the Hoppers a further consolation. Ryan Hobbs (2), Sam Puddy, Bob Smith and Shane Thompson scored the goals that secured a satisfactory victory for the young Wanderers side from their first game in a month.
Meanwhile Wookey Sports won 2-1 at home to Woolavington Reserves. Wookey led 1-0 at the interval thanks to a Shaun Rothwell effort but Woolavington Reserves equalised on the hour mark and the game looked to be heading for a draw before Wookey's mercurial young striker Joynul Ali popped up to bag all three points for the home side with a winning strike two minutes from time.
In the only other game played in the second division Huntspill Crowns won 3-1 away to Countryman after goals from Paul Burrow, Ian Howgate and Robbie Angell.
