Once again the weather put the dampeners on Uxella League action with only two matches avoiding the curse of waterlogged pitches.
In Division One the sole surviving fixture saw a switch of venue for Bunch of Grapes as they transferred temporarily from Cranleigh Gardens to Victoria Park to get their home encounter with Grasshoppers '04 played. With the pitch barely playable and the wind blustery it was never going to be a great spectacle but both sides tried valiantly to overcome the stodgy surface and to continue playing neat passing football on the ground. The first period was a pretty even affair with the young Hoppers' usual teenage energy being matched by a Bunch side who appear to have accepted their fate at the bottom of the division and resolved to enjoy the remainder of the campaign, even to the extent of drawing their team line-up out of a hat before kick off. The subsequent release of pressure seems to have had a positive effect on their football and their collective enthusiasm. After a number of spurned chances at both ends '04 took the lead midway through the first half when 18-year-old Bob Hughes pounced to drive home a low shot after the outstanding Tom Seal had dribbled through the heart of the Bunch defence only to see his initial effort blocked. However Bunch equalised before the interval as they fired home themselves after a frantic goalmouth scramble in the Hoppers box. The early stages of the second period saw Bunch make further positional changes in keeping with their experimental mood but as the game wore on the pendulum seemed to swing in the Grasshoppers favour as they found more and more openings and were eventually rewarded with a 19th goal of the season from 16-year-old Jack Taylor to give them a 2-1 lead. Bunch still battled back with great spirit but were caught on the break as '04 made the game safe with a low bending shot into the far corner of the net from Luke Tier to seal all three points and to send the Grasshoppers back up to sixth in the top flight table.
The only game in the second division saw Blake Old Boys and Pawlett Reserves play out a highly entertaining 3-3 draw. Blake had been 3-0 up and cruising at one stage but goals from Liam Derrick, Marcus Slade and a 40-yard screamer from Paul Court put Pawlett back on level terms and they might even have stole all three points in the final seconds but were denied by a superb save from the Blake keeper. Blake climb to second in the table on the back of this result.
