The wet weather once again severely limited the number of games in the Uxella League this weekend and also in the Quarter Finals of the Dave Hobbs Cup which saw only two of the scheduled four ties being played.
It was a case of from one end of the league to the other for high-flying First Division outfit Red Tile as they followed on from last week's triumphant 4-1 win over reigning champions and current league leaders Woolavington with a cup quarter-final trip to Division Two's bottom side Grasshoppers '05. Despite the relative gulf in league positions the Hoppers second string put up a sterling effort in the first half and were a touch unlucky to be 3-0 down at the interval after a disupted penalty and a bizarre deflected effort contributed to Tile's half-time tally. However, the first twenty minutes of the second half saw Red Tile effortlessly move up another gear as they started to score almost at will, eventually finishing up 8-1 victors. Tile's player-boss Andy Staunton and their impressive jet-heeled attacker James Hamilton were the main men with a hat-trick a piece. Neil Thompson and Damon Jennings were also on target to complete the rout and to send Tile through to last four in convincing style. Simon Turberfield scored the Hoppers' consolation effort with a fine header at the back post after a peach of a cross from Dave 'Elvis' Norrell but it wasn't enough to check them out of the cup-heartbreak hotel.
In the other Dave Hobbs quarter-final tie first division Cross Rifles were also victorious over a division two side as they emerged as narrow 1-0 winners away to Bower United thanks to a Craig McGann strike but the young Bower side were never outclassed in what was ultimately a very tight encounter.
Two games were completed in Division One of the Uxella League with Ashcott racking up a fine 5-1 away win at Bunch of Grapes after a hat-trick from Chris Fletcher, a penalty from Chris Bell and a further goal from James Lacey. Mike Frost replied for Bunch. The three points gained sees Ashcott climb up to the heady heights of sixth in the table.
The other top flight game saw Maltshovel run out 4-0 away winners at Maxwells with all the goals being scored in the first half. Paul Organ broke the deadlock early on and then a brace from Shane Finch and an Andrew Barnett strike made the game safe by the interval.
It was a similarly rain-affected situation in the second division where again only two fixtures were played.
Wookey Sports travelled to Cannington with a full side for the first time in many weeks and armed with a game plan to concentrate on the defensive side of their game after shipping too many goals in recent matches. The returning personnel certainly had the desired effect as the visitors frustrated a lively Cannington side every step of the way and played out a tight but entertaining goalless draw.
The other second division game also saw the spoils shared as Countryman drew 2-2 at home to Pawlett Reserves.
