MATCHDAY 24 ROUND-UP

After two successive weeks of full Uxella League programmes the weather returned with a vengeance this weekend with many fixtures falling victim to waterlogged pitches.

Despite only three games surviving in the top flight one of them produced an almighty upset as reigning champions and current pacesetters Woolavington went down 4-1 at Red Tile. Tile put on a superb show on the day, battling from first minute to last, as they gave their illustrious visitors a torrid time. James Hamilton scored twice and Rich Ball and Damon Jennings sealed this famous victory which puts Tile up to third in the table. Ian Bellinger, who took a real battering on the day, scored Woolavington's consolation.

Pawlett United had started the day in third place but fall to fourth on goal difference after losing 4-0 at home to Cross Rifles. The match proved to be a heated one with no quarter given by either side but the Rifles were definitely the better team after the break, using their five man midfield to great effect to nullify United's strengths. They were also grateful for an inspirational performance from skipper Jason Stephenson who produced a textbook display in the art of the lone striker. Stephenson bagged two of the visitors goals and was joined on the scoresheet by Chris Goodison and Adam Kinsey.

The remaining game in the First Division saw Ashcott secure a solid 3-0 home win over Maxwells after two goals from Chris Bell and one from Chris Murphy. This result sees Ashcott leapfrog Maltshovel into eighth spot in the table.

Only one game made it in the second division but it produced another major upset as leaders Commercial emulated their first division counterparts Woolavington by losing 4-1 to Cannington. Ash Webber (2), Darryl Taylor and an own goal from Commercial's Mark O'Brien gave Cannington the spoils as they move back up to third place themselves, blowing the division two title race wide open again in the process.
