MATCHDAY 18 ROUND-UP

With the majority of fixtures falling victim to the elements only four games went ahead on New Years Eve across both divisions of the Uxella League.

In Division One second placed Railway Club went level on points with leaders Woolavington after an entertaining 6-4 home win over Grasshoppers '04. Railway raced into an early 2-0 lead but the young Hoppers side, who have recently grown in confidence on the back of successive victories, kept coming back every time Railway tried to make the game safe and it was only in the final minutes that they were able to feel reasonably secure that the game was won. In the end it was a case of experience triumphing over youthful adventure with two goals each from Bob Abrams and Carwyn Jenkins, plus another from the sublime Lee Hemsley and an outrageous 'did he really mean to do that' Ronaldinho-style lob/cross into the top corner from Jason Depledge. For the second week running the outstanding trio of 16-year-olds, Jack Taylor, Jason Hitchcock and Sam Peppin, all made it onto the scoresheet for the Hoppers and were joined on this occasion by their comparatively veteran team mate Tom Seal... who recently turned eighteen.

The only other game to take place in the top flight was at Red Tile's Cossington base, which seems to cope much better with the weather than most venues due to natural drainage provided by its sideways slope. Tile secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over visitors Maxwells after a brace from player-manager Andy Staunton and one from Neil Thompson. Tile move up to third in the table on the back of this win.

While three games kicked-off in Division Two only two managed to last the distance after the Bower United/Cannington clash was abandoned following the arrival of an ambulance onto the field of play.

Admirals were able to move up to fourth in the table after a narrow 1-0 win over Pawlett Reserves thanks to a Kev Andrews strike.

In the other game in the Second Division Wookey Sports ran out 2-1 away winners at Blake Old Boys after a Phil Johnson goal and a penalty from player-boss Richard Forster.
