There was no shortage of goals on Sunday morning as Uxella League teams from all three divisions contested the First Round of The Dave Hobbs Cup.
Probably the tie of the round on paper saw a clash between recent Division One high scorers Woolavington and Tiger Old Boys who had both racked up 13-0 victories in recent league games. On this occasion it was Woolavington who emerged victorious with a 5-2 win thanks to goals from Danny Mira(3), Marcus Butler and Simon Caddy. As the game wore on the Tigers threw everything at the home side and hit the woodwork on a number of occasions but it was Woolavington who progressed to the next round of the competition, thanks in no small part to an outstanding performance from Scott Collard who was singled out for special praise by a magnanimous Tiger's manager, Alan Lott.
Richie Jennings' Division Three pacesetters Puriton United chalked up another impressive scoreline with a 9-3 home win over Admirals Reserves. Man of the match was United's Lee Mitchell who bagged six goals while Paul Court, Nick McKennan and goal-machine Darryl Taylor scored one a piece.
A re-shaped Bridgwater Grasshoppers side were unlucky to lose 3-2 at Cannington in a keenly contested cup tie atmosphere. Proving more than a match for their Division Two opponents in the first half, and leading at the interval thanks to another goal from pacey front-man Les Hobbs, the Grasshoppers will take heart from a highly impressive debut from John Kervell and an assured display from veteran sweeper Andy Cattle. However, it will be Cannington's name in the hat for the Second Round draw thanks to good strikes from Bradley Sparrow, Giovanni Cannell and a well-taken penalty from 16-year-old Luke Gregory.
It was goals galore for Huntspill Crowns who won 8-2 at home to Glastonbury Sunday thanks to strikes from Paul Baker(2), Alan Beechey(2), Rob Kilduff(2), Chris Farley and Jason Roberts.
Railway Club were similarly prolific winning 8-1 away to Middlezoy. Railway's main man was John Richards who bagged four goals while Jason Depledge, Carwyn Jenkins, Neil Goodsell and Terry Hodge were also on target.
Pig & Whistle continue to score for fun with a 7-1 away win at Tor Sports. Pig's Ben Bigwood lead the way with a hat-trick, Gordon Addicott got two and Mark O'Brien and Tony Cook chipped in with the other goals.
Pig & Whistle Reserves were not as successful, going down 7-2 to a powerful North Petherton side. Pig Reserves' consolation goals were scored by Jamie Evans and Bob Smith.
First Division Red Tile ran out 5-1 winners at home to Second Division Eastover Wanderers. Tiles goals came courtesy of player-manager Andy Staunton(2), Jason McPheat(2) and Ian Luke. Eastover replied with a first competitive goal for three years from Richard Neale.
Despite goals from Mark Brooks and Tom Presley Woolavington Reserves went down 3-2 at Clearwater.
Cobblestones put their inauspicious start to their league campaign behind them, running out 2-1 winners at Sportsman.
Revitalised Third Division side Artillery West Huntspill Boys continued their winning habits and also played the role of cup giant-killers with an impressive 4-2 home victory over First Division Admirals Landing.
Ashcott ran out 5-1 winners away to Countryman while Black Horse also notched a good away victory, winning 4-0 at Flag Old Boys.
Durleigh ensured that there will be no Tiger Old Boys representation in the Second Round of the competition as they won 4-1 at Tiger OB Reserves.
