There were no home fortesses in evidence this weekend in the top division of the Uxella League with every victory being secured by the away side and with each fixture producing five goals or more.
Champions Woolavington were yet again the leading hotshots as they put six past Ashcott in a 6-1 away victory that sees them return to the top of the table for the first time in a number of weeks thanks to their superior goal difference over second-placed Pawlett United. The six scored on this occasion came from the boots of Tim Netto (3), Simon Caddy, Gary Head and Danny Mira. Chris Murphy replied for Ashcott.
Pawlett United still remain firmly in touch at the top as they produced another impressive result with a 5-2 away win at Flag Old Boys. Flag had looked in control at half-time with a 2-0 advantage after a brace from Lee White but Pawlett reduced the deficit very early in the second half and this saw Flag collapse and United romp to victory and three more points.
Meanwhile at the other end of the table Bunch of Grapes secured their second point of the season with their second draw in succession. Not only that but they registered exactly the same scoreline as in their previous outing with another 4-4 humdinger, this time at home to Maxwells. Maxwells had actually taken a 2-0 first half lead thanks to two goals from Carl Gymer but as the second half wore on Bunch became more dominant and went into a 3-2 lead themselves with ten minutes remaining, largely inspired by an outstanding performance from Dean Fury. However, a 20-yard free kick from Danny Palfrey restored parity for Maxwells and Wayne Spencer then looked to have nicked it with his breakaway goal making it 4-3 to the visitors. However, Bunch were not to be denied a reward for their second half efforts and they levelled the scores for the final time with just about the last kick of the game.
Railway Club remain third in the table after a 4-3 away victory at Cross Rifles. Games between these two clubs have traditionally proved to be tight affairs and this one was no exception but a double strike from Bob Abrams plus a John Richards effort and an own goal from Phil Court proved to be enough for Railway to seal the win. Carl Jones, Jason Stephenson and an amends-making penalty from Phil Court at the right end gave the Rifles hope right up until the final whistle.
In the remaining game in Division One, Red Tile also won on their travels as they secured a 3-2 win at Maltshovel Sports. Tile had looked on course for a more comfortable victory as they led 3-0 after 55 minutes thanks to two goals from James Hamilton and one from Neil Thompson. However, the introduction of Maltshovel's veteran player-manager Chris Davis from the bench changed the feel of the game completely with Davis and team-mate Marcus Payne, who had not scored for more than six years, reducing the deficit to a single goal to give Tile an anxious final period of the game where they were hanging on at times.
In the Second Division leaders Huntspill Crowns were held to a 3-3 draw at third-placed Woolavington Reserves for whom Olly Weston bagged two goals and was joined on the scoresheet by Tom Presley.
Commercial move up to second after a Rob Wooley goal gave them a 1-1 home draw with Blake Old Boys.
After their 10-1 win last weekend Bridgwater Wanderers were held to a 2-2 draw at Grasshoppers 05. The Hoppers reserves had actually looked on course for all three points as they led 2-0 at the interval after an own goal from Wanderers' Aaron Huxtable and a clinical finish from young midfielder Karl Griffiths. However, the visitors never stopped working and got their reward in the second half as Kev Warre scored two good goals to level the scores and earn the Wanderers a hard-won point.
Cannington continue to impress as they registered their fourth victory of the campaign, winning 5-2 at Pawlett Reserves after two goals each from both Darryl Taylor and Nathan Chillingworth and one from Ash Webber. A Simon Coombes effort and an own goal reduced the deficit for the home side.
In the hard-fought local derby between Wookey Sports and Countryman it was home side Wookey who emerged victorious after goals from Craig Rothwell and Phil Johnson gave them a 2-0 win that sees Wookey leapfrog Countryman in the table.
