DAVE HOBBS CUP FIRST ROUND REVIEW |
|
Having reached more or less the quarter-way point through the Uxella League campaign the attention turned this weekend to the first round of the all divisions Dave Hobbs Cup and the ties threw up some cracking action.
The most eye-catching clash on paper also proved to be the most action-packed as Uxella League leaders Tiger Old Boys entertained second-placed Pawlett United in a real barnstormer of a cup tie that produced no less than thirteen goals before the Tigers eventually confirmed their passage into the second round with a 7-6 victory. The Tigers had actually looked home and dry after taking a 6-2 lead but United came roaring back and reduced the deficit to only a single goal with a late penalty. The Tiger's goalscorers were Matt Washer(3), Jamie Chillingworth(2), Aaron Whaites and Pete Hobbs.
Another all-first division clash saw a 4-3 away win for Maxwells 37 Club at Maltshovel Sports after two goals from Steve Spencer and one each from Carl Gymer and Danny Palfrey.
There were also plenty of goals in the tie between Huntspill Crowns and league champions Woolavington with Woolavington running out comfortable 8-2 away victors after two goals each from Ian Bellinger, Matt Blackmore and Matt Fursland plus further strikes from Marcus Butler and Simon Caddy. John Kear and Paulo Nunez responded for Crowns.
At the other end of the Uxella League there was cause for considerable celebration in the camps of Grasshoppers '05 and Wookey Sports as both sides managed to win for the first time this season in their respective ties.
The Hoppers' second string side worked hard to secure a 3-2 away win at Woolavington Reserves thanks to two goals from 16-year-old Jack Taylor and one from fellow teenager Eric May.
Meanwhile, twenty miles away, Wookey Sports also battled from first minute to last in a very physical encounter with Admirals before eventually running out 2-0 winners. Paul Forster gave the home side a first half 1-0 lead but it wasn't until three minutes from the final whistle that Paul Pentney added a second to relieve the tension and set the flags waving and car horns blaring long into the night in sleepy Wookey village.
Another Second Division side in the hat for the second round draw will be Quantock Pride who pulled off a highly impressive 4-1 away win at Squib Madrid with their best performance of the campaign so far. James Bawden made it onto the scoresheet yet again and was joined there by team-mates Sean O'Brien and by two-goal Liam Nash who had an outstanding game. Ian Luke responded with Squib's consolation effort.
Bower United's young side continue to prove that their tender years are no barrier to success this season as they progressed to round two with a 1-0 home win over fellow second division side Commercial. Tom Travis scored the decisive goal.
For the other second division sides participating in the first round - Countryman, Cannington and Pawlett Reserves, it was a case of falling at the first hurdle as they all crashed out of the competition to first division outfits.
Cannington were unlucky not to get something more from their home encounter with Cross Rifles with the Rifles not being at their best on the day but still somehow managing to secure a narrow 2-1 win after strikes from Phil Court, from the penalty spot, and from a tap-in by skipper Jason Stephenson.
Pawlett Reserves also put up a sterling effort against a much-changed Red Tile side before going down 2-4. James Hamilton (2), Andy Smith and Ben Shuffell scored the winning goals for Tile.
In the remaining tie Countryman didn't quite get going on the day and crashed out at the hands of top flight Ashcott in a 1-4 home defeat.
