After a breakfast time sprinkling of rain the sun came out on cue in time for the resumption of Uxella League action on matchday 5.
Flag Old Boys followed on from last weekend's Somerset Cup win with their second league victory of the season and they did so in spectacular fashion as they ran out 9-0 winners at home to Ashcott. Andrew Johnson took his cue from his Premiership namesake as he bagged two good goals and was joined on the scoresheet by Jamie Stewart (2), Mike Taylor, Danny Crossley and Lee Turner. Two own goals completed the rout.
Champions Woolavington were also in blistering form as they thumped Maltshovel Sports 6-1 at home. Ian Bellinger provided the stand-out moment with a sensational goal from the halfway line while team-mate Matt Blackmore also scored a cracker with a left footed effort. Matt Fursland, Danny Mira, Gary Head and John Wall were also on target. Dean Organ responded with Maltshovel's consolation.
First Division leaders Tiger Old Boys consolidated their position at the top of the table with a 5-3 away win over Cross Rifles after strikes from Matt Washer, Jamie Chillingworth, Justin Lewis, Leigh Hurford and a Rifles own goal from Chris Goodison. Goodison made amends by scoring at the right end for the Rifles and was joined on the scoresheet by team-mates Adam Kinsey and Craig McGann.
Just behind the Tigers in second place, and with a game in hand, are this season's surprise package Pawlett United who made it five wins out of five with a 5-2 away victory at Bunch of Grapes. Lee Turner was instrumental in the win with a fine hat-trick, one of which was a cracking volley. Vince Kennedy and Lee Mitchell were also on target for United.
Last season's league runners-up Railway Club also won away at Grasshoppers '04. The young Hoppers side, featuring eight teenagers in their ranks, took an early lead and at the beginning of the second half spurned a number of gilt-edged opportunities to make the game safe. Railway survived the scare and then went on to finish the game strongly and duly took their own chances to secure a 4-2 win after goals from John Richards (2), Bob Abrams and Lee Hemsley. Jason Hitchcock and Matt Burgess scored for the Grasshoppers.
The remaining game in the top flight saw an entertaining 3-3 draw between Maxwells 37 Club and Red Tile. Carl Gymer (2) and Steve Spencer bagged Maxwells efforts but Tile denied them a victory by equalising in the closing minutes of the game.
In the Second Division leaders Huntspill Crowns surprisingly went down 2-3 to Countryman despite goals from Chris Farley and Paulo Nunez.
Second-placed Bridgwater Wanderers also lost 2-4 at home to Woolavington Reserves for whom Sam Weston (2), Tom Presley and Matt Weston were the goalscorers.
With the top two losing Commercial took full advantage and claimed top spot for themselves after a 5-0 home win over Grasshoppers '05. Darren Hewett led the way with a hat-trick while team-mate Rob Wooley bagged two.
Another team to profit from the top two slipping up were Admirals who won 5-3 away to Pawlett Reserves after a triple-whammy from Kev Andrews and a tasty double from Andrew Cheese.
Blake Old Boys made it three wins from their opening five games as they came away from the long trip to Wookey Sports with all three points after a 5-2 victory. Credit must go to Wookey for a brave fighting display after they started the game with ten men and on 35 minutes lost yet another to injury when Nathan Truckle was whisked to hospital with a bad neck injury. Despite this further setback Wookey soldiered on and were rewarded with consolation goals for captain John Osman and for regular goalkeeper Craig Rothwell who was operating on the day as an emergency striker and took his effort well.
In the final game in the Second Division Cannington made it two successive victories as they beat the youngsters of Bower United 2-0 thanks to goals from Josh Harvey and Dan Mitchell.
