MATCHDAY 2 ROUND-UP

The second round of Uxella League games took place on Wednesday evening taking advantage of the light evenings and late summer weather to get games played before the winter draws in. Champions Woolavington picked up where they left off with another emphatic victory, this time by 7-1 over Grasshoppers '04 away. However, the impressive scoreline does not tell the whole story as the Hoppers made a real game of it for long periods, taking a shock lead through 16-year-old wonderboy Jack Taylor and were on level terms at the interval. In fact Woolavington's advantage was still only a single goal with a quarter of the game remaining but they demonstrated their class as they found an extra gear in the closing period and hit five excellent strikes to eventually win the game in style. Their goalscorers on the night were Ian Bellinger(3), Matt Fursland, John Wall and Danny Mira.

Red Tile also hit a magnificent seven at home to Ashcott after goals from James Hamilton(2), Simon Bone (2), Damon Jennings, Rich Ball and from player-boss Andy Staunton.

Cross Rifles managed only one less as they came away from their trip to Flag Old Boys with a very impressive 6-0 win after a hat-trick from jet-heeled striker Carl Jones and further strikes from Mike Hawthorn, Craig McGann and Matthew Phillips.

Newly-promoted Pawlett United made it two impressive wins out of two as they ran out 5-3 away winners at Railway Club after two strikes from Lee Mitchell and one each from Will Beggs, Lee Turner and Ryan Williams. Carl Tucker, Lee Hemsley and Nigel Gillard responded for Railway.

Maltshovel, another newly promoted side, registered a creditable point from a 2-2 home draw with Tiger Old Boys. Jamie Chillingworth and Aaron Whaites scored for the Tigers.

The other evening result in the top flight was also a scoring draw as Maxwells 37 Club drew 3-3 with Squib Madrid. Maxwells had actually raced into a 3-0 lead after two goals from Wayne Spencer and one from Mike Stone but Squib fought back and eventually levelled the scores ten minutes from the end.

The second division also saw action on Wednesday evening with Huntspill Crowns registering the highest scoreline of the season so far as they beat Grasshoppers '05 10-1. Neil Niblett and veteran Brian Read both bagged hat-tricks, Richard Cattell scored twice and Paul Walton and John Kear completed the rout. Ally Witts hit '05's consolation effort.

Blake Old Boys made it two wins out of two in the second flight as they beat Cannington 6-1 at home.

Admirals also maintained their perfect start as they hit five for the second game running and won 5-2 away to Woolavington Reserves.

Commercial also won away, 2-1 at Pawlett Reserves after goals from Robert Trice and Darren Hewitt.

In the remaining evening game in division 2, the two young sides of Bower United and Bridgwater Wanderers played out a 1-1 draw. The eleven 16-year-olds of Bower showed great maturity as they scored early on and went on to completely dominate the first 45 minutes but Wanderers came back at them and took command of the second period and eventually levelled through John "Dowie" Richardson ten minutes from time.
