A bitterly cold morning greeted the teams, but a gripping match was in store. Countryman kicking into the strong wind found early control, creating a couple of early chances, taking the lead after ten minutes with a swift passing move from the right wing, Shea Beakman beating two defenders to place the ball neatly past the keeper.
It seemed as though Countryman were going to take control but then quick counter attacks from Cannington saw them draw level midway through the half and then take the lead soon after. A wonderful effort from Cannington's right wing saw a dipping volley hit the cross bar, Countryman not knowing what had hit them.
The second half started in much the same way, with Cannington extending their lead to 3-1 inside five minutes. The Countryman rallied, fine performances from Jason Birch, Chris Franks and Ben Birch brought just rewards, and following good approach play by Dan Hynds, Chris "Zidane" Franks dipped and curled a wonderful free kick into the top corner to reduce the deficit.
Dan "Robben" Hynds was awoken from his slumber and a fine left wing move saw a delightfully inviting cross converted on the far post by Jason Watson to level the scores. Ten minutes later again through Dan Hynds, a fine passing move resulted in Dan beating three players and delivering another tantalising cross, defenders and strikers alike missing the ball, it crept into the far corner to give Countryman the lead.
The centre of everything, Dan "Robben" Hynds was sent tumbling in the box, only to be booked for diving. I suspect though the exertions of the day, added to the copious quantities of cider the evening before may have been the cause, Dan collapsing through exhaustion being the inevitable result.
An encouraging day for the Countryman against a keen Cannington team, man of the match Guy "lino" Culliford said "It's all about positive thinking and encouragement, especially to your team mates". Well said Guy.
