PURITON UNITED 3 GLASTONBURY 3 |
|
A 40-yard volleyed wonder goal from midfield playmaker Lee Turner was not enough to send Puriton home with three points as they eventually had to settle for one. Puriton started well enough in the first five minutes with Will Beggs and young 16-year-old Josh Harvey going close but dragging their shots wide. Then, in the 15th minute, Glastonbury went on the attack themselves and their striker ran on to a through ball and lobbed the United keeper from twenty yards out. Puriton were stunned because up until that point they had had most of the play. On 20 minutes Josh Harvey hit the crossbar from five yards out and then two minutes later Lee Turner also struck the bar. Puriton then stepped up a gear and a through ball to striker Beggs saw him beat five players at pace before slotting home past the visitors keeper to complete a fantastic goal.
Glastonbury had their chances as well but United goalie Gilly made some good saves to keep them at bay. Then in the 38th minute a young Glastonbury striker ran through the sloppy Puriton defence and slotted home from ten yards. Again Puriton replied with an attack of their own but could not finish. Then just before the break Glastonbury's keeper tried to clear a back-pass but only succeeded in finding United's Lee Turner who hit the ball on the volley from 40-yards out into the top corner for an absolute wonder strike. In the second half Darryl Taylor came on for super- veteran, 75-year-old Pete Dean and soon got on the scoresheet after a good passing move saw Darryl drive a low shot into the bottom corner to register his eleventh goal of the season. However, again Glastonbury did not give up and with Puriton having almost 80% of the play in the second period they just could not kill the visitors off and the visitors duly scored again from a corner with fifteen minutes to go. Afterwards, Puriton manager Rich Jennings said: "I was not pleased today with the defending. We have worked hard over the last five or six weeks on our defending and not conceding goals, but today we were poor in that department and we did not keep to our man and were second in many challenges. Glastonbury are not a bad side but with the chances we had again today we should have been six or seven up at half time. But all credit to Glastonbury - they came here and battled to the end and really deserved their point. I have told my players we need to start controlling the ball better and putting our chances away and if we can do that we will finish high in the league. We will work hard again in training to sort this problem out and maybe we can turn it on next week against the Quantock Pride boys."
